The other comments already drove home the point, so I'm just gonna say what you should do in the future WHEN something like this happens again: don't do the assignment for him, and let him go explain to his teacher why he didn't do the assignment.
Why did you help him? It's his assignment, therefore his job and responsibility. And if he's old enough to give class presentations, he's definitely old enough to know better and understand consequences.
Should have let him face the consequences of not doing it himself.
Should have let him take the L. He's not gonna learn consequences if you save him
