Today, after spending 6 months and $15,000 on lawyer fees at my 13 year-old son's request, his abusive, alcoholic father no longer has any legal right to see him. How did my son repay me? He ran away to live with his father the very first time I told him he couldn't have friends sleep over. FML

Today, my son got in an argument with my boyfriend, packed up his stuff, and moved in with his dad. Not five minutes later I saw my boyfriend doing his stupid happy dance. When angrily confronted, he admitted he orchestrated every argument for months until he got the result he wanted, my son gone. FML

Today, my 14-year-old son's pathetic rebellion came to a head. He ran away from home, leaving a note saying he hates me and was leaving forever to be part of a gang his friends had formed. He came back an hour later crying. His whole gang had gotten mugged, which he somehow blamed me for. FML

Today, after weeks of money slowly disappearing from the stash in my bedroom, I confronted my son about it. I'm not sure which is worse: that my son is a thief or that he actually blamed his father for it. We've been divorced and haven't spoken for eight years. FML

Today, in response to the guy whose son told him to fuck off for disturbing his one day off a week, my son spent literally his entire savings account for a deposit on a shitbox one bedroom house because he’s sick of his dad finding him things to do every ten minutes, and I don’t even blame him. Today, it's been thirteen years since I divorced my husband for being too hard on our son. Since then, he's remarried and had two beautiful, well-behaved kids. My son, meanwhile, is a thieving hellion who doesn't care about anything but himself, and my ex wants nothing to do with him. FML

Today, I'd had enough of my ex-husband ignoring me and our son, so I threatened to take him to court for sole custody. He didn't even hang up the phone to his client, he just told me to go for it because our son isn't really that interesting anyway, not enough to fight to try keep him. FML

My parents got divorced when I was five, and I'll admit that when I didn't get my way at my mom's house, I'd threaten her saying that I was going to live with my dad. I knew living with my dad was unsuitable for children, but I tried anything to get my way. If I ever went to my dad's house, it was a brief trip (No more than three or four days) and I would be back home, apologizing to my mom. It sounds like you're trying to be a good parent, OP, but I think you need to establish your relationship with your son. YOU are the parent, HE is the child. etc

give him a few days and the honeymoon period will pass and he'll be back with you. my dad had no legal right to see me after I was 13 and old enough to clearly state this to a lawyer.... but I still saw him now and then when he was in his good moods. it gave me the choice- which it gives your son to. it's not that he never wants to see his dad, it's that he wants to see him on his terms only.
