Today, my external hard drive broke. My husband tried to fix it, and the computer told him he needed to format it. Apparently he didn't know what formatting does, so he did it. I'm a wedding photographer and had a full summer of unfinished wedding photography on there. FML

it's savable!!!!! don't do anything else to it and google how to recover data!!!

If your husband doesn't know what 'formatting' means, why was he the one attempting to fix it? Also, as you had important files on there, it might have been worth calling someone who was paid and qualified to do it. And this is what backing up is for.

Back up, back up, back up or live with the consequences. On a happier note, there are companies that can restore the info. Look in your yellowpages or online for computer data retrieval.

You can probably still recover the data, a real geek would probably do it for free if you brought the drive to them. Once you know what you're doing it's not rocket science to use Recuva or Testdisk to recover the data. Just don't let your dumb noob husband touch it again!

Why in God's name did you not have ANY back-ups? YDI, moron.

YDI for not being a very professional photographer if you have such shitty data security. That said, FML for the poor bastards who trusted you.

External drives die so frequently you can't trust them with anything long term...to those of you saying external is supposed to be the backup, you're wrong..redundancy is the backup if she didn't have it anywhere else she deserves the law suit ahead... Also, "quick format" is not automatically checked so he probably did full format

I would not even read anyone who calls you an idiot for this or your husband an idiot. were all human. but I hope you read this in time to get all your photos done . There are some really good data recovery disc. I would look into one of them. I am sorry I can't name any off the top of my head right now. I feel for you. sorry to hear that this happened to you. I hope you recover them in time

plz say you weren't my wedding photographer lol

You can still get the pictures back. Format only allows the information to be overwritten; it doesn't actually delete it. There is a program called Undelete Plus that you can use. I've used it a few times to save very important information.

Download Zero Authority Recovery...I've done it on my old drive, and recovered a bunch of stuff I forgot I had.

you let him near your work with him not knowing WTF he's doing? sorry that's your loss than for not being more responsible..
