Today, I told my parents I don't really like children and probably won't have any in the future. They sat me down and gave me a lecture on how people who hate kids are heartless. FML

Which is worse? Realizing you don't like children and having them anyway to please someone and end up resenting the kid(s) or to just not have kids and disappoint your parents? I'm pretty sure it's the first one.

Some people (like myself) have phobias of children. I know I'd be resentful and probably give them up for adoption. That'd ruin the kid's life and that's how I know I would be better off not having kids. If you have children or not, it has no impact on the one nagging you and it's none of their business. Don't have kids for the wrong reason and don't give in to peer pressure! You have your own life, do what is best for you.

I'm adopted. Didn't ruin my life. In fact, I'm glad; I was given a better life because of it. Kudos to my biological parents, whose names I will never learn, for making a mature decision.

I do not like children but that doesn't mean that i hate them. Some people are not made for parenting and we have to respect their decision.

I've gotten the same remarks (& much worse) from complete strangers. If you don't change your mind expect to hear these kinds of things for many years to come. There are lots of childfree people around though & every one I met was very nice & caring.

why oh why oh why do people have to make out like I have issues because there are things I would rather spend my time and money on? reading and watching the hedgehogs and bodyboarding and camping and going out till 6am are just much more enticing to me than diapers and arguing with people who have not yet developed reason or emotional control

Disliking people or things has nothing to do with being "heartless." You can dislike something without actively wanting to cause it harm. For example, I dislike you, but I wouldn't seek you out to hurt you.

You're definitely not heartless for not wanting kids. Why on earth would your parents want you to raise kids that you don't even want? You'd probably end up resenting the kids and I doubt that would make for a good life for the kid. It's selfish of them to think you should just be having them anyway
