Hypnotism is real but only in the sense that a person can be made susceptable to suggestion given the right circumstances. The primary requirement is that the individual in question must believe in the idea of hypnosis. If a person is skeptical or in disbelief they will be completely unaffected. This distinction means that the entire phenomena is a placebo being that the so called hypnotist is actually just someone with good stage presence and the volunteer is hypnotizing themselves because that is the outcome that they expect. The "hypnotized" individual is then no longer in concious control and suceptable to suggestion. They may even have no recolection of the events that occur while hypnotized. The mind is a powerful tool that acts as an interface to develop a model of our surroundings but that model is inherrantly based on our preconcieved notions of those surroundings, which may not properly match up to physical reality.
