You can get herpes without having sex. Having said that, pretty much most people you know have it. It is a "manufactured scare" with few side effects and pretty much no impact on your life. Ignore it.

Has no impact on your life? Most people have it? So don't worry about who you sleep with from now on-o wait, it's illegal for you to not let someone know you have a contagious disease and end up infecting them. If most people had it then it wouldn't be a big deal. Most people don't have it. Yes the stigma is bad and it doesn't ruin your life but it certainly has an impact.

Giving herpes to yourself is hard. By the time the blister shows up on you(r lip for example) your body has become immune enough to it that you shouldn't catch it anywhere else. This is what I remember from my research paper.
