A safe following distance is a distance such that if the person in front of you has to slam on their brakes, you can react in time to avoid a collision. Unless you're going in reverse, the guy behind you is usually at fault if you get rear-ended. He can squawk all he want, but it's irrelevant. His insurance will end up paying any damages you incur. You really can't let some moron make you angry. Had your visor not been down, your actions could have been construed as assault, which would be to his benefit.

In the majority of American jurisdictions, a rear-end accident is presumed to be the fault of the person who rear-ended the vehicle in front of him. If he wants to bitch and moan, let him. Then tell him that the law doesn't give a shit and either he or his insurance is paying, or you'll take him to court and get a judgment.
