Why did you leave it where your dog could get at it? If these ashes were important to you, why didn't you take a little more care with them? Dogs are dogs. They like bone meal, among many, many other things. Where was this package that your dog could get at them? Dogs aren't cats; they don't just jump up onto high surfaces. This is your fault for being so careless!
Unless you had a shower in a different building, your dog was not left "alone in the house".
