Today, my 21-year-old girlfriend finally got the courage to tell her mom that she wanted to move in with me. It turns out she was right to be afraid; during the talk, her mother yelled at us, calling her a slut and saying she was too young to be "shacking up with some guy." FML

Wow. That's the thing about overly-protective moms. She needs to learn that she's grown up, and to let her make her own decisions. Hope everything works out for you guys!

I would have to ask, how long have you known her? I knew a girl who showed up to the door of my friend's house after a week of dating, with packed luggage and even her cat in arms....man that's awkward.

If she calls her daughter a ****, that's not being over-protective, that's being controlling and verbally abusive. Whatever the objections she had, ie too young, no job or the fact they've been going out for too short a while, her reaction is downright uncalled for and creepy. #22 Because moving in with someone and going through the whole sharing bills and responsibilities is a necessary to know if you are compatible. There would be fewer divorces if couples actually took time to know each other for real, as in on the everyday life’s ups and downs, before they took such a commitment as getting married.

Actually studies show that couples that move in together before marriage are more likely to get divorced.

57 is actually right. Do your research guys.

the girl is adult and can do anything within the bound of law. the mother has no right to call her ****. calling the daughter a **** has degraded her in her daughter's eyes for her whole life.

I would not want to be you when and if you get around to eventually proposing. But hey at least your girlfriend loves you enough to move in with you.

It sounds like OP was there when his girlfriend brought the subject up to mom; that would go a long way with me to show that they have a committed relationship. While I get that every mom worries about her children getting hurt or making a bad decision, this one doesn't win any points from me for her reaction.

I'm thinking your girlfriends mom is single?!

Bitches be crazy. Seriously though, don't worry about it. My cousin's girlfriend moved in with him when she was 16 (it's legal in New Zealand). They're happily married now :)

"Right in the sense that she's afraid that her daughter might be taken advantage of, brutalized, cheated on, ridiculed etc..." Oh yes, that's why she starts to ridicule her daughter herself! I get what your point is, but please, it's not like OP's girlfriend is some poor, naive 16-years-old. When your children are grown-ups, you treat them like grown-ups, aka, you have a serious conversation instead of simply scolding at them.

If her mom was trying to protect her daughter from said things I dont think shed have gone about it by calling her a ****. When my daughter expresses se'd like to move out Ill ask for her plan, give her some cons and listen to her pros and be sure shes thought long and hard about her decision. I dont care how shocking it is, if u have nothing nice to say tell them u need some time to comprehend and walk away for a bit. Ranting will only push a girl away.

The Titel Says it All, Feel Sorry for you bro

So I wonder how old she thinks is old enough to "shack up"? :P
