Today, after taking my clothes out of the washer, I noticed at the very bottom of the washer my boyfriend's USB stick I found a couple of days ago. The USB stick contains his English essay, and his novel he has been working on for almost six months. FML

You can just dry it off in the sun... don't use it for about a week so that it dries thoroughly, then it should work just fine. I really don't understand what all the fuss is about.

Yeah, it should still work once it dries out (flash memory=no moving parts). Should be a lesson to your boyfriend, too—clean out your own damn pockets!

HDI, he should have it back up somewheres. Like Google Docs or something. Even attaching it to an email and emailing it to yourself.

Doesn't matter, just throw it in the dryer. My bf leaves just about everything in his pockets. I've washed his flash drive(s) countless times, and I usually never find out until I open the dryer when the clothes are done and it falls out. He doesn't even know, because nothing ever happens to it. No worries.

it should still work. dry it realy well with a hair dryer and test it. ive washed stuff like this all the time

You didn't finish the FML. It would probably still work after that. Test it out and make sure, and then probably back it up to the computer or another flash drive just in case. If it still works, tell him about it in a few weeks and he probably won't be very mad.

... so? He still has the originals somewhere, and he can buy a new USB stick for $.37 and make new backups.

Just blow him when you see him next & things will be fine

First of all, like almost every has said, dry it out and it'll be fine. Buy a new jump drive and transfer all his data onto the new one, cause you've shortened the lifespan of the old one. It'll still work, but get a new one anyways to be safe. Second of all, YDI for not checking your pockets! What if it had been an ink pen to go through, and you stained all your clothes?

I've washed my husband's USB sticks (aka thumb drives) more than once and they've never once been ruined. Just let it dry out and it should be fine. Your boyfriend should be cleaning out his own damn pants pockets anyway. Just make sure to double check before you wash from now on.

he's a prat if he keeps his only copy of important stuff on a usb stick
