Today, me and my boyfriend were hanging out with some friends when one asked when we were going to get married. I said not anytime soon.My boyfriend then got up from the table and stormed off turns out he had the engagement ring in his pocket to propose with.FML

I think that's his fault, not yours. A lady should be surprised about how the question is asked but never surprised by the question. He obviously needs to get on the same page. Good luck.

I couldn't agree more 1! Marriage is something that should be discussed at length and one should never go into to asking the question without already knowing the answer. They should've talked about all this seriously before, and multiple times. Would you rather have her completely surprised, asking the question out of the blue, and run the risk of her saying no, or have her know you're both thinking about marriage, not knowing when you'll propose (a week, a year, two) and know that she'll say yes? The proposal is still a surprise, it's just not an unwanted one.

Wrong a lady should be surprised by both! She should yes know it's coming but not know when. It's both of their faults if they didn't talk about things they wanted to do before hand aka pay of student loans or get a promotion at work.
