As they are your assistant, and your only other coworker, I would have figured you talk often and would have brought it up, even before you settled on a date. like "hey I'm thinking about going on a vacation on this date" would have avoided this whole thing. but it's done. just say you're unavailable and somthing urgent came up. they don't need to know.

Hire a temp to answer calls and to only forward messages that are emergencies. Notify all of your clients a month beforehand, with a reminder the week before, that you be unavailable. Problem solved.
