Today, my date and I were getting to know each other, and we talked about our favorite music. He's into metal. Trying to impress him, I mention I like metal too. He said his favorite band is “The Gonzorks” and I mentioned that's my favorite too. He looked at me dead and cold and said “Um, actually that band doesn't exist.” FML

One of the most pathetic things you can do is lie to try to impress someone else. If they don't like you for who you are, then they're not worth your time. It's social skills 101.

This is a failure on both sides, TBH. He sounds like a gatekeeping jerk by making up a band name to see if you "knew" them, and you were more interested in him liking you immediately than being honest. Not a great start for a relationship all around. Also, here's a thing: People don't need identical interests to be in a good relationship.
