Today, I was debating weed legalization in drug awareness. I was thoroughly unleashing arguments: how marijuana turns normal citizens into criminals, how the government spends billions to enforce drug laws, when I lost my train of thought. My teacher grinned saying, "My point exactly." FML

Ok, my turn on my own post. My slip up came because it is very hard for me to organize my thoughts when I don't write them down and also because of frequent personal use. This is all besides the point of the debate though. I oppose the marijuana laws for both my own selfish reasons and from an economic-minded libertarian approach. It is written in the Declaration of Independence that all men are entitled to their own pursuit of happiness. From a public health point, marijuana does not physically harm anyone. Hard drugs should remain illegal because they will lead you to decay and death. Marijuana does not cause lung cancer or any other type of cancer. Zero people in the history of mankind have died directly from weed use. It is impossible to overdose and the worst that can happen is lethargy and fatigue. It can and has been used to treat over 120 diseases or symptoms of other medication. This country spends 12 billion dollars fighting pot with no results. If marijuana were legalized and taxed, then it would produce 6-7 billion dollars in revenue. That means almost 20 billion dollars would be gained every year that marijuana is legalized and taxed, money that can be spent on education, health care, environmental reform, defense, anything. Currently there is a huge overpopulation problem in prisons. 40% of all arrests are because of drug laws. Again as an American, I want to support legitimate American businesses and my government with my weed money. The people bringing weed into this country are international gangs that also deal in cocaine, heroin, prostitution, slavery, and arms deals. I do not enjoy supporting those causes for what I consider should be my personal freedom. To legalize pot would also create millions of jobs. Limited hemp research has proven that it would reduce dependence on foreign oil through hemp products and biodiesel made from hemp. Hemp is biodegradable and plastic can be synthesized from hemp fibers. Hemp seeds contain more protein than soy beans and could lower malnutrition if only it was legal to include it in aid packets sent to Third World countries. There is no slippery slope after you legalize pot. To say that fully automatic weapons could be legalized once pot is is absolutely absurd. Jake, the only reason weed is grouped with illegal drugs is because the government decided to place that label on it. Other drugs do physical and emotional harm through addiction. In response to #54, a good reason all those chemicals are present in weed smoke is because there has been no scientific approach to removing them, and most weed is smoked without a filter. Tobacco has been cultivated in America for 400 years and science has been around for 150 of those, the tobacco companies have billions of dollars to spend funding both research on how to make it safer and to fund anti-pot studies. I say enough propaganda. Listen patiently to what others say and accept it only if they can prove it with facts. All that I have stated above can be proven with facts. Jake, could it be that pot makes your family lazy because they don't want to be arrested outside? For someone who posts that you don't want people to cram opinions down other people's throats, you certainly like to cram your own down ours. In the last one I just read you were using mostly all caps.

over six and a half thousand potheads have read this post.

I have to admit, it's kind of funny seeing as how it does rape your short term memory. I am a former pothead. I choose not to smoke anymore but I think it should be legal. I don't agree with lacing the weed though. You can turn a good person bad with that.

yes im for the legalization of marijuana, but to say there's no proof that it does any harm is kinda incorrect. it makes your memory go to shit.

you think you got called out? I came into class blazed as **** and a girl behind me said, "umm excuse Ms. Johnson? I'm allergic to smoke so can I change seats?" and the teacher looked at me, and I giggled. FML yet i totally deserved it.

oh and grow some ballz. sure the teacher called you out, but all the times ive been called out i just laugh it off. when it comes to weed, you just gotta giggle.

holy crap what a bunch of bullshit silly nanny comments, just in general. First we have the fellow pot smokers making comments such as "it cures cancer".....please, put the pipe down my friend.....if pot cured cancer then.....oh god I;m not even gonna get into it.... Then we have the lame-o's saying that their friend died from smoking pot......how do you know it was the pot? There are soooo many things which surround our everyday lives that can kill us, make us sick and give us cancer.......Just look at the stats for how many people have died from alcohol...it's silly why THAT is still legal Oh let's not forget mister "respect my opinion", funny you should do the same....... Weed we will never be legalized......get over it, I can......... PS....this FML is the lamest one I ever saw

You're not going to get into weed curing cancer because no proof to back it up. Wanna know why you have no proof? BECAUSE IT'S TRUE!!

for the record, Im an honours student of Neuropsychology going for his doctorate in a few years with a 3.7 GPA while working a 35 hour work week, and i smoke weed at least twice a week. and 27, THC is not an addictive compound. Douche.

27, i'll answer that first question "If weed isn't addictive, then why do so many potheads keep smoking it, even to the point where you throw your futures and lives away?" People don't throw their futures and lives away because they smoke weed. Those people weren't going to make anything of themselves whether they smoked pot or not. That's like saying alcohol causes people to give up on their futures and lives; but there are just as many corporate executives who are alcoholics as there are bums, possibly even more. I've been smoking for nearly 8 years now; currently I'm finishing my sophomore year at a major university, I pay my tuition, my rent, my insurance, etc. and I smoke everyday, at least twice a day. I don't hide the fact that I smoke and no one holds it against me because I handle my business. Quit listening to the "above the influence" commercials. They're bullshit and are probably getting more teens to try smoking weed than they're preventing.

Did you remember the part about how it wouldn't turn normal citizens into criminals if it was legal? Or about how a parent is less likely to get into a violent domestic dispute with another member of the family if he's been smoking a spliff as opposed to hitting the bottle? How about the fact that the only thing that makes it really dangerous is the fact that it's illegal, so some drug dealers will lace it with just about any other substance they can think of on a whim? I heard about this one guy who had been buying from a dealer, smoking up every day for 5 years, and his brain was totally fried. Turns out, the dealer was putting paint thinner in it to increase his profit margin slightly. Do you have any idea what smoking paint thinner every day for five years can do to a human? You know how that could have been avoided? Legalization. In the words of Cypress Hill; Legalize it!

A. I think it should be legalized, because this is supposed to be a free country and preventing people from doing something that makes them feel good is just wrong. I mean sure it has health effects, but I mean really, the only way you are going to be affected by them is if you smoke as frequently as many tobacco users do, which is like 2-3 packs a day (not exactly sure how many joints that would add up to). B. To whoever thinks it cures cancer, you are misguided. It doesn't cure cancer, but it stops pain, so that is why a lot of cancer patients use it. Chemo and radiation is very painful, believe me, my dad went through it this year. C. It all depends on the person who smokes. Not everybody will be affected in the same way. Some people get lazy, most however don't become any more or less productive. So go ahead and legalize it, at this point it may actually greatly help the economy. Of course there would have to be an age restriction on it of 17-18 because it's far worse for you when your brain isn't fully developed. PS: I am not a smoker and never plan on it, but I don't see any evil in anyone smoking it.
