Well, that probably explains why nobody cares about him. Even if he did find your comment creepy, physically harming you was a bit of an over-the-top reaction.
Your statement threatened to take his complaint away from him. Complaints are the most precious possession to old folks.

People don't like insecure compliments. Although well intended it is insulting Next time say something like "I'm sure there are a lot of people in your life that care a lot". I give you props for caring & having good intentions.
Maybe he's just an elderly troll? Kind of seems like a reversal of roles to me, like if a young woman (don't know if OP is male or female, so I'll just go with female) were to complain about no one caring, and an older person said they cared even though they just met them, I could seem them reacting in the same sort of way (minus the cane). Or he's just a cynical asshole.
