What his grandma said was terrible. What Op's boyfriend said, was equally just as or not a lot more, terrible. There is no justification for what the boyfriend said. That's all.

Maybe, just maybe... he doesnt do "better" because he cares about you, even though you're fat. I stick with my gf despite her batshit crazy, toddler mentality family, because she is a gem and I wouldnt give her up for the world. He might just like you anyway.

Some grandmothers are very opinionated, and speak their mind to often. I know in my case, I just agree and move on. You can't always win with them! Maybe he's not one to argue with his grandmother. Doesn't mean he thinks poorly of his girl, but maybe not the best way to handle it...
