My experience is that it’s pretty infrequent that people get meaningful promotions from applying for other positions within the same company. For one thing your current boss usually has to approve the transfer and that leaves them with finding a replacement. That tends to kill the opportunity. I got incremental promotions for doing my job well and continuing that job but with a slightly better title. And I got promotions by going to a different company. You either have to work with your boss to get his impression of you improved or find a new job. There is rarely an opportunity to move around your boss within the same company.
