Today, I was interviewing a potential candidate for a job opportunity. He started the conversation by saying that he was having a weird day because his friend just got married. To which I responded, “Oh, fun!” He'd actually said that his friend got murdered. FML

You know, most people don't bring up their friend was just murdered for initial conversation either. Don't fret over it, correct yourself and move on. The potential employee isn't in their right mind, and no one would ever expect to hear 'murder'. Married is a correct assumption for the interchange, especially since you were prepared for a more light-hearted conversation! Our mind fills in a lot of blanks. :)

I've done the same before! once another mom up at the school told me her grandma had passed away that day, it took me a moment to fully process what she had said but my mouth for some reason said "that's always fun" then I realized what she actually said and felt awful! I still cringe thinking about it.

The killer probably had fun. Not sure I'd want to work for a company that endorses thrill-killers, but a paycheck is a paycheck.

I had a similar experience. I was talking to an older gentleman and I asked if he was married. He mumbled a bit but I heard "I've been married for about 5 years." I thought: I'm glad someone his age has found someone, and responded "that's cool." What he really said was "I've been widowed for about 5 years." I felt bad for the unfortunate chap.
