Why are people saying he's a jerk? He might have just randomly said it and then added "I'm 1% by the way!" so that he didn't creep her out. Or, if he knew she liked him, it could be like what someone else said and he tried a roundabout way to say he just wanted to be friends.

That's terrible, especially because it's not true. It's actually a very low percentage, probably about 20 or 30 percent of the time that's the case. Just stating that fact, to with it what you will.
