Today, I wanted to punish a student for being late. I decided to start a pop quiz before he arrived. I was positive there wasn't enough time for him to finish. He scored full marks and I couldn't say a word. FML

I used to piss off teachers by acing the final exam, while blowing off most of the homework and classes. Mind you, they'd "get their revenge" by giving me a crappy grade. But the honest-to-God fact of the matter is: A lot of public school curricula are crap. Common knowledge, and it doesn't take a "gifted" student either. Just an "annoying know it all" - as I was often called. Our school system PUNISHES those who go out and seek knowledge on their own. The self-starters, the curious. You can't get CREDENTIALS for that knowledge, unless you pay your tuition, and DO YOUR TIME, sitting in class, doing busywork homework. I don't know how institutionalized learning has an option in this society. But by far, the WORST aspect of this, are the ego-driven teachers, who actually HATE any student who goes that extra mile, thinks outside the box, steps out of line, and doesn't follow the program. It's teachers such as these that have destroyed all creativity and originality in our culture. F the lives of every poor student who has to sit through your class. What sucks is: if you truly LOVED to teach, and made it a fun and interesting experience for the student, he wouldn't be late. He'd love to come to your class and learn new exiting things. But because your poor little ego was crushed by his disrespect, you felt you needed to "punish" him. As if you could control other people's behavior. A lot of teachers are really just in this for the control, and the ego stroking. Very sad.

140 - couldn't agree more. Arrogant teachers like OP and students that just fall in line are what is destroying our already shitty educational system.

This is a sign not to be that teacher that just hands out extra work for something that happens to everyone. Just tell him to take his seat.

That's a really bitchy move. But hey, what goes around comes around... so I'd be more mindful of your actions, karma can be an even bigger more heartless bitch.

haha **** YOU. I've had somethin like this happen to me. cocksucker

YDI for trying to make the appearance of their intelligence relevant to what time they arrived.

that's what you get for being so vindictive. teachers should want their students to succeed not attempt to make it so they can't

this --> "Those who can, do. Those who cannot, teach." is a load of crap. it's kind of funny, but you generally have to understand something before you can hope to teach it. not to say there aren't bad teachers who neither know how to do -or- teach, of course. but most teachers and professors know the material and have a gift for sharing it. it may just be a personal preference over doing field research / "doing" - not to mention no one will ever be able to "do" if someone doesn't teach! that said, OP, if you're tired of this kid being late, just penalize him in a more straightforward way, duh. no need to be vindictive. i was that late kid too and i was always late because my time management sucked (i could have used help with that) and plus i knew i could get away with it! i'd pull stuff like this just because i could. he's obviously actually interested in whatever you're teaching.

"Those who can, do. Those who cannot, teach." That phrase is typically only true when applied to the Arts, not Sciences. Someone who has studied music all of their lives may have an incredible amount of musical knowledge, but lack the technical proficiency to apply it. They could have joint problems that prevent their fingers from moving fast enough to be in the Boston Philharmonic. They may not have the creative ability to compose music that others appreciate. Same with painting and sculpture. Could know all about the science BEHIND those arts, but not have the creative abilty to apply it in a way that provides them with a living income. Thus teaching becomes the optimal route.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of teachers who know the material, but can't teach it. I don't consider standing in front of a classroom and reciting the lesson to be teaching. It does take a skill more than just knowing the material.

Intelligence has nothing to do with whether he arrives on time or not! If he is habitually late, give him detention instead.
