I'm sorry for your loss. As some unsolicited advice, it may be best to wait to get another animal companion anyway, in order to give yourself time to grieve. I would also suggest looking into who you would suggest an investigation of the person the puppy was adopted from, as suddenly falling ill is not normal if the person is taking care of them.
