Today, my boyfriend randomly decided to let me know that he believes there's really no such thing as cheating, unless both partners explicitly agree that the relationship is monogamous. And no, he wouldn't agree that ours is. FML

op, sorry to hear that your boyfriend (hopefully now an ex) thinks that way. if you haven't already id say its time to dump him and find someone with the same thoughts on a relationship as you have. you shouldn't have to spell that out for him that it is cheating. hopefully you can find a real man who is willing to commit .

There are a lot of options with this FML. Op could have just assumed. The boyfriend could have assumed. Maybe he thought up the excuse on the fly to cover what he knew she wouldn't like. But from the sounds of it, the boyfriend is looking for a way to get Op to break up with him.

It is hard to determine what the correct response is. It depends on how long they have been dating. and whether or not it had been stated that they were in a relationship. I have been married just shy of 21 years. The first thing stated when we decided we were in a relationship is that it was exclusive. That was almost 22 years ago. And neither of us has been afraid that the other would cheat. And we are planning for our 25th anniversary trip.
