Today, I stayed with a friend because I was recently kicked out of my home and had nowhere to go. When I went out for job applications, she asked, "Can you pick me up a pack of smokes?" and then got mad that I didn't have the money, calling me selfish. FML

Today, a homeless guy asked me for a cigarette. Knowing that I only had a couple left in my pack, I gave it to him. He opened it, took one out and thanked me profusely. A bit surprised, I went on my way. Oh yeah, that's right, the pack contained the money I'd withdrawn from an ATM. FML

Today, I tried to give some change to a homeless man. My girlfriend pulled me away and ranted about how homeless people are all basically bastards who deserve their misfortune, and that I shouldn't give "our" money away. FML

Today, my "best friend" invited me to drink with her and a couple other friends. She told me to "just bring a few bucks for beer". When I got there, no one else had brought money, including her. They only invited me because I'm the only one with a job. FML

Today, I put my paycheck in my wallet, intending to cash it in the next day. Later on, I met up with a friend and went to a party. I ended up getting so drunk, I gave away my $400 check in exchange for a pack of smokes, thinking it was a $5 bill. FML

Sometimes you really just don't have the money. OP had probably counted his money and calculated that he/she just had enough for transport and maybe lunch if they were lucky. Been there, done that. Sometimes you really are just that broke. You can't magically create money in your wallet by just wishing for it. From personal experience, I am guessing that OP would very happily have contributed if they could and will maybe one day find a way to repay the favour. But not today. OP, if you can't find a job, find a way to solve small problems for businesses like becoming a freelance salesperson, delivery guy or maintenance guy. In spite of having an engineering degree, I currently fix machines for engineering shops, help businesses get rid of redundant machines and help them find the stuff they are looking for. I started my business by just handing out businesscards at engineering shops. Good luck!

Depends on where you are in NJ it's. 7.50 in NYC It's 15.00 but I agree with you. OP is already there for free and didn't save anything before that's. on them. If they were living at home they could have done odd jobs and chores for money.

Where I'm from smokes can cost upwards of $20 depending on brand. Plus, I wouldn't be keen on supporting a bad habit. If she asked for groceries, sure.
