That's your cats way of teaching you to hunt. If you let the animals go, it sees that as a fail and will bring you another one. I dunno if it'll work, but try only letting your cat out in the day, because they hunt more at night. Might help.

why is everyone hating on cats? come on people cats are awesome pets! their super cute :) and to everyone saying 'get rid of it and get a dog!' did you ever stop to think maybe OP just happens to like cats more than dogs? you know some people really don't like dogs... or maybe OP already has a dog, ever think of that?
