Today, while correcting essays, I spilled ketchup on a student's paper. I managed to successfully turn it into a happy smiley face but when proudly looking at the result, noticed it was right next to the big "F" that I had graded it. FML

Positively reinforcing failure. Weird trick. Hope it works for you.

Many options, rewrite the essay for the student to maintain the F credit, change the F into a B- so whilst being a pass which is an unfair advantage on the other students who actually did do a great job it will save your bacon of seeming like a heartless person.

This is why you make eating and grading papers two separate things. When I was in 6th grade, I always received my math homework back with a coffee stain on it.

I'm rather concerned for your students if you think "...that I had graded it." is grammatically correct. No offense, but it may indeed be you that deserves that "big F" with a smiley face, OP.

"... the F that I had graded it." Seems right to me. "I had graded it an F" -> "the F that I had graded it". "I kicked the ball" -> "the ball that I had kicked". Admittedly, "which" is preferable over "that", but it's a minor mistake that I don't see as necessary to get worked up over.

Is an English teacher, forget comma before but?

You can always use a wite out. Problem solved and next time don't eat while grading papers

all these comments about separating eating and grading they forget open is a teacher they don't have time to make them separate tasks lol

I guess that means you deserve an E for effort.

u graded the students work not essays work teach, essays are not alive
