Today, I met my girlfriend's parents. Remember the show Honey Boo Boo? They seem sophisticated compared to the family of weirdoes I got to meet. It's almost got me reconsidering my planned proposal. FML

Today, I took my girlfriend home to meet my parents. They thought it'd be hilarious to put on ridiculous accents and act like country hicks, spewing obscenities and strongly hinting that we're into incest. She soon left in disgust. I haven't heard back from her since. FML

Today, I was meeting my girlfriend's parents for the first time. She warned me they were a little weird. Right when we walked in the door, her parents were there to greet us...in the nude. Apparently this constitutes as a LITTLE weird. They both hugged me. FML

Today, I met my girlfriend's extended family for the first time. Her family kept telling her how much I looked and acted like her older brother and I'm guessing by the end of the day she agreed, because now she pulls away and gags when I try to kiss her. FML

Today, I met my girlfriend's parents for the first time over dinner. In order to make a good impression, I was as polite as possible, and tried to be as engaging as I could. Near the end of dinner, my girlfriend's mom says, "I liked your old boyfriend better." FML

That’s a tough situation. It depends on how close girlfriend is to her family. If they are very close and frequently interact then it’s reason to think things through carefully. If she’s not that close then it shouldn’t be a deal-breaker. Also if girlfriend seems reasonably intelligent but her parents not, then she won the genetic lottery... One more word, as we get older we tend to take on to some degree the characteristics of at least one of our parents. Try to figure out if girlfriend is more like her mom or dad in personality and if that one is tolerable or not. OP, I wish you well. This is not an easy thing to handle.

I wish I didn’t marry my husband. His family makes our lives terrible. YES, we are getting divorced. Just be weary that is is rough when the family isn’t good.
