It could have to do with his parents beliefs. For instance, he could be Jewish, you could be Christian. His family may want him to date a Jewish girl. (that's an example, not to offend anyone)

That might mean that he's a bible thumping loony and the fact you don't talk about religion all the time could be the "difference" he's talking about.
In my not-insignificant experience, the Bible-thumping loonies aren't likely to let religion go unaddressed in a relationship.
