I think it has more to do with theunfortunate choice of words used by the boyfriend that upset the OP. ie "settled" not "chose" etc. Personally i think he was trying to give the Op a compliment but the words came out wrong.

I think I'm gonna favourite this FML because it can be taken two ways: 1) OP's boyfriend settled for her because he was maybe too shy or insecure to go/wait for someone "better" than OP. 2) OP's boyfriend is trying to say she is the best he'll ever have, but it just didn't come across well and OP misunderstood. So rather more of a compliment than insult.
