I find it funny that people are saying take a bus/taxi... they probably mentally pictured this where they live, like I mentally pictured a place like where I live being no where near bus and taxi services.

First, why hide the key there in the first place? And second, why not have a friend/coworker/family member, or even said "oldest"--who I'm assuming is of age to drive and bring the keys to you in the first place--take you home? Mistakes were made, OP. Guess you'll be better prepared if it ever happens again.

Embarrassment aside, I suppose that it would have been alright for your 12 year old to walk 12 miles to bring the keys to you.
