Today, I was fired for "blatant, inexcusable racism". My boss had asked me which website background I preferred for our company, and I said that white backgrounds are usually best. He thinks that I believe in white supremacy, and that's bad for the company's image. FML

Does your boss think "a stab in the dark" is insulting gay people as well?

Some people just try to find any excuse to shout racism, even when it's totally ridiculous. Sorry that you had to associate with one of them OP

If you're in New Zealand, you can and should definitely take this to court. You will win your job back and likely a small compensation. You can't be fired in NZ... unless you steal or show up high. It takes a whole lot of communication and paper work for you and the boss to lose your job here.

Quite sure you can sue for wrongful dismissal.

nope, it's legal to fire someone for a stupid reason or even an incorrect reason. OP can file for unemployment.

In the United States, this is true. However, the FML says that the OP is from New Zealand, where I'm fairly certain that an unfair dismissal can be taken to court.

The funny thing is, that boss is actually the racist here

How is the boss racist? The boss is being ridiculous and having some strange interpretation maybe but not racist.

#25 More often than not, the people who call out "racism" in innocuous things are some of the most racist people you could possibly meet. People who don't care about what "race" someone identifies with don't look for or point out "racist" things.

25 - they boss was one thinking in racist ways. and my other interpritation is that the boss assumed op was being racist over a simple comment because they are white, which is racist to assume that all white people are racist

#31 I'm not so sure about that. Sometimes there are things that you may find fairly innocuous because you are not the target of that specific kind of racism but someone who is will find it racist. For example, a lot of non black people think that the phrase "you're pretty for a black girl" is a fairly innocuous compliment. However, if you're black that "compliment" is going to make you feel really uncomfortable and you will find it racist. However, I will agree that finding racism in the situation that OP mentioned is ridiculous.

46 - I fail to understand how ANYONE could think that's a "fairly innocuous compliment", black or not. Surely, if it was said about them, they wouldn't consider it a compliment at all.

#46 Any statement with "for a" in the middle will end badly.

You would be surprised. Every time someone says that it ISN'T an innocuous compliment people always come out to say their overreacting

This is definitely an arguable point, and clearly a bullshit reason to lose your job. Your boss should legally not be able to fire you for having an opinion (even you were racist) let alone suspecting you felt that way.

Go over his head. Dont just accept that.

You must have made some joke to go with your suggestion and you're leaving that part out, cause I can't even imagine it happening the way you say.
