Today, I started my job as a waiter. I was excited when my first customer paid for the bill. I go over to the table, half-expecting a tip. I got to the table and no money was on the table. On the bottom receipt was written: "Ever heard of deodorant?" Apparently I smell bad. Thanks for the tip. FML

Cheeseburger: $3.75 Fries: $2.00 Soda: $1.50 Dessert: $3.00 Tip: $0.00 Finding out you smell like shit off a reciept: PRICELESS

That tip was worth more than any $ you could have gotten...

That's a good tip. If you act on it, you will get more money in the future.

I'm torn between YDI and FYL. YDI because frankly, you stink and FYL because I always tip. You'd think this guy's boss would of said something or one of the other servers, in a polite way. This guy must have showered before the interview or he probably wouldn't have been hired. Maybe this guy's first customer was just a super jackass and the waiter doesn't really stink. What kind of restaurant is this place? What did the guy order? How many people were with him? Did you ask somebody privately whether or not you stink after the incident? I gotta know the answers to these questions before I vote. Taken at face value though, right now I'd say YDI

waiters and waitresses should NEVER expect a tip. Shitty service, no tip and thats the bottom line

I tip according to the service given. 

Waiters and waitresses are paid by the restaurant to do the job, the tip is something extra if the customer thinks the waiter/waitress took care of them well. Personally, when I get bad service, I have left no tip and waited in another part of the restaurant just to see the look of disappoint on their face, if u don't do your job well, dont be expecting to get paid well. People go into the restaurant business knowing that they get paid very little per hour and that tips are not guaranteed, stop your whining, it almost sounds as bad as teachers complaining about wages even though they only work nine months, shut the **** up!

#28 Teachers hourly pay is still lower than in a lot of professions, and have you evr tried to deal with 30 kids in one room all day? Controlling them is a challenge on its own, then try actually teaching. I know plenty of teachers who willingly took pay cuts over the past two years in order for the schools to be able to keep them on staff. The state gave less money, and the town didn't have it. They either had to fire a ton or teachers or give everyone huge pay cuts. No one that I know has complained. But on the subject of your actual post, a lot of time there isn't any other option for a job. I've applied to over 200 jobs in the past six months, from grocery store bagger to nursing homes, to child care. I've applied to tons of restaurants. Would I like a job as a waitress? No. I'd hate it, but I need the money, adn I would take it, and if people didn't leave a tip I'd be very annoyed. Yes, OP should have taken a should have taken a shower, but they also could have been fine in every other aspect of the serving. Maybe a lower tip with the note, but not leaving any tip at all is a little extreme for 'you need deodorant" The ONLY time I didn't leave a tip was when my waitress spilt a bowl of HOT soup on me. Instead of saying "Oh, I'm sorry, are you alright?" she made a disgusted noise, went back to the kitchen and ordered me another soup, and brought it out. She didn't bring me anything to clean myself up with. My lap was burning and I tried to clean myself up with my napkin. She then charged me for both soups, even though I hadn't asked for one after she spilled it on me. I also called her manager to let him know what had happened. If you spill soup, okay that's fine, even if its burning on my lap but you need to at least say sorry, or bring me something to clean up with..... and if it's not my fault, I don't want to be charged for it, especially if I didn't ask for it.

I've not left a tip one time in my life. It was because the waitress disgusted me. She was pretty, clean, all that, but I ordered two small steaks (like 6 oz... not big at all...) and she made little comments at everything we ordered, and when I ordered food, she made like three comments and made me feel awful over it. And then, after the fact, she took over 90 minutes to get the meal there... so I left no tip... Only time. I generally tip 15-20% cause I know it's hard... Lower for semi-bad...

"Waiters and waitresses are paid by the restaurant to do the job" & "Personally, when I get bad service, I have left no tip and waited in another part of the restaurant just to see the look of disappoint on their face" I can't lie here, Zomb: That's simply the most ignorant statements I've heard in quite some time, and it leads me to several immediate conclusions regarding whatever kind of person you are. (By "ignorant" here I mean, "not having enough understanding / experience in life to see things as they really are.") 1) Most waiters get paid around $2.50-3.50 an hour and that gets nullified by taxes each paycheck: Their livelihood depends on tips. Unless your waiter is giving you a bad attitude a tip is manditory. 2) Most people think that waiting on tables is a simple affair of walking to a kitchen and bringing food out, nothing could be further from the truth, for the job is often a complicated and stressful one replete with fast-paced multitasking. The customer only sees the tip of the iceberg, as it were. In the past, Zomb, even though I tried as hard as I could, I gave bad service due to the situation in the kitchen, just having a crappy day, and/or personal tragety striking me. It's very hard to wait one's best when one's father's in the hospital suffering from a heart attack. Open your eyes, buddy, life is giving everyone a hard time *constantly,* and such an attitude in dealing with others only contributes to the problem and highlights your lack of experience/understanding. Where are you living that people are paid $2.50 an hour?! I understand that tips are the greater part of someone's salary, but I don't believe in ALWAYS tipping well. If the waitor is clearly overwhelmed or having a bad day, that's different. It's clear that we all have lousy days, and they still deserve a good tip. However, if a waitor is offensive, rude for no reason, ignores your table, or, as in the OP's case, has foul body odor (let's face it - having someone who stinks handling your food isn't exactly appetizing), they may deserve a lousy tip. Sorry, but when you work with the public and depend on tips, sometimes you need to earn it. I'd rather walk to the kitchen myself to pick up my plates and refill my own drinks than pay some rude, smelly jerk to do a bad job.

@Megan B $2.50 an hour is about standard minimum wage in the United States for servers. It's set lower than most other jobs because they receive tips.

Teachers know that they will not be paid very well before they enter the profession, stop bitching, it was your choice to be a teacher. Yes, I do know what it is like to teach, I'm a professional musician and during master classes I can have around 50 students playing on drum pads or snare drums, you have it easy. There are always other options for jobs, the question is, are you willing to do them? In college I worked morning stock at a hardware store, four a.m. until nine a.m., they are always hiring, go fill out an application. The OP might have been a great server but honestly if they smell bad I don't want them around my food. The customer actually helped out the OP by informing him that he had an odor problem, the smell could have either cost him other tips or the job.

Perhaps American restaurants should actually pay their employees. If they can't afford so many waiters, don't have so many waiters. But then of course you won't have bowing and scraping at you all the time which is what I hear Americans expect. But having employees you can't afford to pay is ridiculous.

Actually when many teachers in Australia started teaching, the pay was the same as a backbencher. Also, teachers' pay doesn't go up each year- there are no raises to keep up with inflation, unless the teachers fight for it. Then when they do get a raise of however many percent, it's still only after 5 or so years, and it's often way less than what they were going for. People thinking teachers are greedy really should go and look up some of the facts.

Err you got your tip, so what are wining about?

Wining goes well with dining! But the OP didn't say anything about there being a bar.

They should have at least left you some money to buy deodorant!
