Today, I paid $500 for a gym membership after moving into a brand new house, since 12 years of software development has taken its toll. When I told my instructor about my goal to lose 35lbs in two months, he simply said, "Yeah... That's not going to happen. Try another gym," and left promptly. FML

That one awkward guy

Today, I tried to compliment a girl at my gym by saying, “Wow, you’re really strong!” She smiled and said, “Thanks.” Then, probably to be polite, she said, “You’re really… trying.” That was her actual word choice. I went home and considered canceling my membership, but I found out that it's designed to be almost impossible to leave the gym. FML

First impressions

Today, I joined a gym. I’m overweight and not very athletic, so I was nervous. I looked around and tried a treadmill. I start walking at a chill pace, then got ambitious and cranked it to a "light jog." Within seconds, I tripped, fell, and sent the emergency stop button flying across the room. The gym staff ran over and I swear someone said, “Well, at least he’s trying.” FML

He kind of did his job there though....the average healthy weight-loss rate is approximately 1-2 lbs per week ish? Weight-loss as rapid as you wanted could really screw you up.

35 pounds in 2 months is really a bit high but 20 to 25 should be possible.

If the instructor took that goal seriously and helped you, he or the gym could be liable for any health issues you have later on. So you really can't blame him for refusing to help you meet that goal. Also, gym memberships can be a huge scam unless you pay month-to-month with no add-ons. Just a tip. Good luck with your weight loss, though!

Well, he was being truthful. Why waste time on someone who's already being unrealistic?

The trainer was pretty rude, but he was right. It is impossible to lose that much weight that fast, at least in a healthy way. With a good diet and exercise, the average loss is 1-2 pounds a week. The first week or two it may be as much as 4 pounds, but it tends to slow down after that. Good luck with your weight loss, but make sure to do it the right way. It may take a little longer, but it will be worth it.

that's a pretty big drop in such a short amount of time but he still shouldn't have walked off.

Your goal, if you're heavily overweight, should be to lose about 10% of your body weight over a period of 6 months. This can be accomplished with simple resistance training and some cardio 3-5 times per week, as well as tracking your food intake and being in a slight calorie deficit. There are some wonderful apps to help you with this process. Don't give up, OP!

Yeah, YDI. You asked for something unhealthy and irresponsible. 35 pounds should take 4-6 months to lose in a safe and lasting way.

Start swimming and work out on the side.

Why are you being over ambitious? What's the harm in spreading your weight loss over several months. If your aim is to lose 35 lbs in 2 months so that you can look better on the beach this summer and then go back to your old ways, it is of no use. You will gain the lost weight very fast. Ideally you should make exercise s part of your lifestyle. That way, you have a lifetime ahead of you to get back in shape. Why the hurry?

Tell his boss what he said and ask for a different trainer. He was extremely unprofessional. However he as correct, losing weight that quickly is unadvisable
