I remember going to the Philippines for the first time and having my 5 year old niece tell me to take off all my jewelry and hide any valuables when I go out. I've also been told that if you walk down some streets with earrings on, people will snatch them right off your ear. So maybe the OP was in a neighborhood that she didn't feel entirely comfortable in. If the guy rushed towards her, maybe she was afraid for herself. I wouldn't have reacted the same if it happened to me here at home. But if I was there, I might have reacted the same as her...
