Today, I realized I was getting a bit chubbier than usual. I decided to go for a little jog to stay in shape. Little did I know, my neighbors that just moved in brought along with them, a fully grown German Shepherd. Not tamed. My "jog" quickly turned into a "sprint for my life". FML

Running from a dog only makes them want to chase you. Next time try holding your ground. Don't make eye contact, dogs see this as a challenge. Try not to be afraid either, they will sense it and act on it. Be calm, friendly, and confident, and the dog won't be aggressive. You might want to check what your local leash laws are as well, and suggest your neighbors keep the dog inside, or at least on their property. Good luck with the getting in shape OP.

Yeah, I agree. OP, if a next time unfortunately happens, stand there and make yourself boring. Dogs love the chase. Also, tell the neighbours to train their blasted dog so it doesn't chase people!

Keeping a few dog biscuits in your pocket might help as well. You might make a new friend. Or keep the dog busy eating, while you slowly walk away.

Yeah well, it's hard to just tell someone what to do, I always run, always. It's just the fight or flight instinct we all have, then the adrenalin kicks in and were off. I was once jogging, on average i could jog 2 kilometers without getting tired, I was up to 2.5 five saw a dog sprint at me I was 500 meters from home. Didnt even think of being too tired to out run it, my legs just blasted me 100 meters and I lost interest of the dog. So like I said its hard to tell someone when in the situation, instinct will take over. Unless you've been trained that is.

Next time stop running, the dog will start to think its a game and continue to chase. Hey, at least it made for a good work out!

My former Tae Kwon Do master taught me that if you are threatened by an animal, you could try punching it in the nostrils. This might scare the dog away or if you could hit hard enough you might even kill it. With the laws the way they are these days, you might have a lawsuit on your hands if you were able to injure or kill this dog. Next time get the neighbor to leash their dog.
