Today, I had to make the difficult decision to get rid of my cat. He's terrible around unfamiliar people and always attacks them on sight, completely unprovoked. He even does this to my niece, who isn't even a year old. Still, he's such a sweetie despite his lack of people skills, so I feel like shit. FML

No judgement, there are times when the adult thing to do is to keep other people from getting hurt… I had a cat I loved for several years. Then my wife and I adopted an infant. There was no problem when he was an infant. But as a toddler he wouldn’t leave the cat alone. I tried to keep them separated, as did my cat. But my son kept provoking the cat. He wasn’t de-clawed. First my son had scratches on his hands and arms and then his face. I didn’t think having Bill the cat declawed was the solution because he was only protecting himself and without that he’d have been vulnerable. And Mom and I tried to teach our son to leave the cat alone, but he was just too attracted to the cat. Ultimately we had to put the cat up for adoption - I really hated that, but it was either that or risk to my son… Some things are tough decisions and nothing will ever make it feel good. And people not in that situation won’t understand.

no sympathy here for you. I could never ever get rid of my cat. EVER! did you even think of putting him in another room when you have company?!? I have more to say, but it wouldn't be polite...

For the sake of a cat? Nope. Maybe he'll do better on a farm or something where there will be plenty of space for him to avoid people. OP, don't let people make you feel guilty. You obviously wouldn't have done it if it wasn't absolutely necessary.

I don't understand why you couldn't simply put the cat in a separate room when guests were over. Maybe don't get any more pets until you're willing to work with a behaviorist and trainer when there are problems.
