Set ground rules. Charge her at least $375-450 a month in rent if she wants to open that can of worms. Then take in her fair share of electric and cable bills!

But she asking like $4-5 an hour at $162 a week.

Well I can see why she lives with you who would want to live with her,and play her bullshit game give her the money than hand her a bill for room and board for the month and tell her to pay up or get out and if hubby doesn't support you cut him off for afew months see how fast he packs mom's shit

A babysitter (perhaps even full-time since you both work) might end up costing you a fair bit more than what renting out a room including utilities would get you. Are you sure this is not a reasonable deal? It hardly seems like a full-time wage, just something extra. I'm assuming she's not independently wealthy since she's living with you.

No, that's not what she's asking for. She's asking for being paid for babysitting time, which might be 40 hours a week for all we know, since both parents seem to be working. That would normally cost SIGNIFICANTLY more than room & board.

A little empathy might go a long way.

I can see where paying her wages for work done makes sense, but if that's the case, it's also fair to expect her to pay for her share of the rent, utilities, food, and to do her share of the housework. In any case, it's obviously a good time to agree on ALL the rules for this arrangement, or to end the arrangement.

Except it's obvious the MIL is not considering rent or utilities at all. She seems to feel entitled to living there for free AND getting paid to watch the kids. Sorry, but it don't go both ways. If she wants to be paid: she can pay rent/utilities AND get paid full price for babysitting; OR she can have babysitting credited toward rent/utilities.

Not necessarily, it depends on what their schedules are. She may only be watching them a few hours a day, and possibly not even 5 days out of the week if they have different days off.

Tell her you’ll pay her and you’ll be giving her a 1099!!

Maybe you have no debt to your MIL, but your husband had about 18 years of rent-free, utility-free existence from her, not to mention how he arrived in this world.

$162 a week is super cheap for multi-kid daycare. STFU and pay the lady!
