The poo eating? It's usually a result of either a vitamin deficiency, or stomach issues that make the dog have the compulsion. There's medicine for treating the second that is essentially a probiotic- we had to buy it for our shitzu-poodle mix, with the brand we bought being called "No Stool." We gave him half a tablet every other day until he stopped eating poo that he found (it did give him diarrhea toward the end of that frequency) and now we give it to him when his breath starts to smell bad. Haven't had problems with him eating it since. Obviously, if it is the first problem, you have to change dog food brands to something with better nutrition.

The third one- that there isn't a way to stop, to my knowledge- is that female dogs that have had or are about to have puppies have the compulsion to eat it to keep the area-especially the area immediately around the puppies- clean. Most mother dogs will stop doing so once the puppies are weaned, and almost all will have stopped by the four month mark, unless one of the two issues above becomes a problem. Mother dogs that are bred constantly or have their puppies taken away too early may not grow out of the behavior.
