Pich's Illustrated FML

Hi there! It’s Saturday, it’s thus the weekend, so it’s time to relax. First of all, here’s a few gifs. You know gifs, right? Animated images. The current star doing the rounds is Patrick from Spongebob Squarepants. You can see him with a cat or a tiger, playing dominos or scaring people. What a card!

This week’s guest brings us joy with a lovely illustrated FML, but first of all let’s gets to know her. She’s a 26-year-old young lady, she comes from a small town in France and she’s called Christelle Galloux aka Pich. But she points out: “Rule n°1: never call me “Pitch”. Never.”

OK, we’ll try and stick to that. Especially seeing that she’s a serial killer. Well, almost, she’s an independent illustrator, which is almost the same. And she illustrates kiddy stuff. “Youth albums, princess magazines, stickers for childrens’ bedrooms, I do a lot of things all at once and I’m spreading myself a bit thin but I can’t manage any other way. I like the world of children. I like drawing worlds where everything ends well, where life isn’t a bitch, where everyone is nice and smiling (I’m a Care Bear and I’m OK with that). I like drawing things that are so cute that I go gaga all by myself.” How cute is that?

Christelle has a nice drawing style but she reckons that she needs a few more years work and that she’s still “in training”. She considers that she started drawing seriously a bit late and that she can’t do what she wants yet.

Despite that, she’s working on illustrations for Fleurus, which will be in an album, which will come out in September.

When asked what her life has been like, her first answer is: “Haha, that’s always the question I like.” Then she explains that she studied medicine. For six years, even. “And then, as heart attacks and cancers aren’t really my thing and that I sucked at lumbar punctures, I thought I’d draw cartoons. So you could say that I’m self-taught. Speaking of which, the other day I was asked whether I was self-taught was because I didn’t want to take any courses. Ha ha ha…”

Pitch’s (oh yeah, I went there) projects have nothing to do with medicine. They have more to do with “great projects with great writers”, “a poster shop for decorating kids’ bedrooms” and wanting to become “Pokémon master”.

But to become Pokémon master, we first have to finish this interview!

Cats or dogs?
Cats, of course (dogs have a lot of work to do before they can conquer the internet).

What are the last things you enjoyed in movies, music, books and comics?
The last time I went to the movies was in June 2012, so I’ll pass. I’ve been listening a lot to Saez’s triple album Messina, enough to annoy my husband.  As for books, I’ve been discovering Japanese writers such as Ryu Murakami, Haruki Murakami, Nosaka Akiyuki, and Yoko Ogawa, who are great! It’s a superb literature, very dark and difficult, but touching. I’ve been getting into Battlestar Galactica, ages after everyone else, and it’s fantastic.

Who are the main artists you like and whose blogs you check out all the time?
I’d say in no particular order Benjamin Lacombe, Adolie Day, Clément Lefèvre, Line Parmentier, Lostfish, Maly Siri, Aurore, Nephyla, Rachel Zimra, Cathy Delanssay, Orpheelin, François Amoretti, Ludovic Jacqz, Ood Serrière, Marguerite Sauvage, Loish, Margaux Motin, Petra Brown, you mention one and three more spring to mind, I’ll be here all night.
But “whose blogs you check out all the time” is overstating it, I just wait for things to show up on my Facebook timeline!

Tell us what you enjoy in life, your passions, pastimes, vices and everyday pleasures.
After drawing, my big passion is food. Food is life. I like to cook, I like to take picture of my dishes (I like red pimentos), I like to eat my dishes, I like to put my recipes on my food blog afterwards to make people’s mouths water. Another of my big pleasures is slouching around on the couch with my husband, in front of a good TV show, with a beer and some cheese. This is living. (Author’s note: I totally validate the beer/cheese/TV combo).

Tell us a crap joke. Possible joker: if you don’t have a joke, tell us your biggest FML.
A kangaroo walks into a butcher’s. He asks for a loaf of bread. The butcher says, “this isn’t a bakery” and the kangaroo replies, “that’s OK, I came via windsurf.”
(YES, it’s FUNNY. If you don’t like the absurd, I can’t do anything for you.

Do you have a phobia? If so, what is it?
Yes, I’m paraskevidekatriaphobic. I’m not really; I just wanted to write that word (that I learned to show off with in social gatherings, it’ll do).

To finish off, ask yourself a question that you would’ve liked to have been asked, and then choose to answer it or not.
What do your parents do? They are dentists. (Mom, Dad, if you’re reading this, this illustrated FML is NOT dedicated to you, please know that).

That’s all for this week! I’ll leave you with some videos, as per usual! There are still some people who haven’t understood that you should stop messing around behind TV presenters. Or that you shouldn’t trust any old guy dressed as Steve Jobs. Fake! See you next week.

If you want to be the next published artist, send an email to alice [at] fmylife.com including a link to your website/blog/DeviantArt. But DON'T send your illustration right away! You need first to get in touch with me, and I'll tell you what you have to do!
