Today, I called work crying, telling them that I wouldn't be able to go to work tomorrow due to my grandmother's sudden and tragic death. After hanging up, I walked into the midnight release of Grand Theft Auto 5. I had no idea my boss was also an avid gamer. FML

Most people have played hooky from work at some point, but you never EVER use a family member's death as an excuse. That's just horrible. Ydi

Come on, especially he should understand the magic of GTA V

WOW OP, a sudden and tragic death of your grandma? A bit drastic for a video game don't you think? You couldn't have just said you were very sick? Lol ydi

someone's death shouldn't be used as an excuse.... Sorry, ydi

but 166, he can make so much mor money robbing banks and killing people on gta v!

And then he can use that money to go solicit prostitutes! A win-win situation.

now he won't believe you when your grandma does die a horrible tragic death

#193 yeah it is like his grandmother dies on the release of GTA VI

You totally deserved it, OP. You should never lie about things like that. You know what I did today? I sang happy birthday to my grandmother for her 85th birthday. She passed away 30 years ago, and we sang for her at her grave.

Everyone does understand. Even my Grandma understands, and she's strict as all hell.

Ok, I think this one needs a follow up.... Now, I'm not necessarily trying to specifically defend OP here, but this could go either way if you really think about it. I mean on one hand, if the story is true, maybe he went to the midnight release to distract himself for the moment and happened to run into his boss, causing things to get awkward as he called in saying he won't be in "tomorrow". In that case FYL OP. On the other hand, if this is just an excuse to get out of work to go to a midnight release for a video game and you lied about her death, then this is the biggest YDI I've seen in a LONG time!! But if I had to guess, based on the name you chose, I'd say you used it as an excuse and YDI....

He probably just used it as an excuse to go see the movie.

Movie? GTA is a movie? So many people are gunna be PISSED.

If your grandma died, then the last thing you need to do is buy a video game, especially at a midnight release.

96, his grandma didn't die. That was a lie to get out of work.

YDI OP my grandma died 2 months ago. So coming from somebody who lost their grandma I hope your boss fired you in front of everyone

Why couldn't you have said food poisoning worked for that bride.

Exactly! Say something embarrassing about yourself, rather than something douchey like the death of grandma. Explosive diarrhea has gotten me out of many obligations :)

Or that you've been working quite a bit and would like some off-time to relax... You know... Honesty.

104, that never really works. Depending on what time he works, he could have got to the release and still made it to work on time. I have gone to midnight releases the night before work and then gone in. However, I don't do anything that involves heavy machinery so coming in sleepy a few times is not going to really screw me over.

Not sure why #104 is being thumbed down. It is possible to be honest (or at least not lie) to your boss. OP could simply have said that he needed a day off, without embellishing some grand lie.

You totally deserved that one. You lying about your grandmother's death is pathetic. I know you wanted the game badly, but really? Is it really that hard to wait? And there goes your money. Say goodbye to buying other games for now. That's what you deserve.

I think saying op deserves to lose their job and be penniless over one lie is a bit harsh. I get that OP's lie wasn't particularly tasteful, but it's not like he hurt anyone by telling it. People need to lighten the hell up, not every act of dishonesty requires a witch hunt.

I don't understand why he doesn't use holiday time. It might sound ridiculous but it's people like OP that get companies to stop people getting paid for sick days!

not every job gives paid holidays or paid sick days

Well, would you not fire an employee when you know that he blatantly lied to you to not do his job? Not exactly a hard worker. Who knows what else he doesn't do...

Didn't hurt anyone? Shit, he killed off grandma! What the hell?

Abbypoo, he lied to his boss. As soon as you learn your employee is dishonest, it is a liability to keep them around. If I were the boss, I would be thinking, "If he lies so easily over a video game how much would he lie about stealing money or doing important work?" Yes, we don't need to start a witch hunt, but Op did deserve to be fired. On top of that, he lost his job for no reason. Game releases are usually advertised some months in advance. Op should have asked for time off, or at least asked to come in late. If he could not go to the midnight release, then he could have waited a few weeks to get the game. Game vs. job... I would rather keep my job and not get fired.

75 even jobs I had that didn't give paid time off let you request days. The release date of this game has not been a mystery for some time. If op would have asked back then, the day off could have been granted. If this is a job where missing a day would need to be covered by someone else, it can screw up someone else's plans who had planned on the day off and is getting called in. If much rather be put on the schedule on advance for someone requesting time off, paid or unpaid, then being called in at the last minute.

YDI OP. Using a family member's "death" is not right.

CallMeMcFeelii 13

But it's GTA 5! OP could have waited until he found a pedestrian in the game that looked like his grandmother, shot her, then called in and said some lunatic just shot his grandma. It would sound legitimate then..

YDI. You could have came up with a better excuse than a death in the family.

Lying about a death is a horrible thing to do, even for the sake of GTA. Better start looking for a new job!

You sir are a full blown scum bag. There are plenty of people in the world that would give anything to have loved ones back. Then you go and fake your grandmothers death over a video game? I'm glad you got fired. On the plus side, you now have plenty of time to play your game.

I don't think that the FML said he got fired, I agree wih you though.

Whenever I think I'm in trouble, I say "I'm so dead." Does that mean I'm really dead, just because I said it?

You missed the point, 106. You NEVER lie about a family member dying just so you can get out of your obligations. Not only is it incredibly wrong, but it can backfire quite easily. A former coworker of mine decided he wanted a week off, so he told our boss his grandfather died. Little did he know, our boss was a good friend of his grandfather's. So when he found out about the lie, not only did my coworker get fired, he had to pay back the bereavement pay he received. People who do that deserve every bit of comeuppance they receive!

I've never seen an FML more YDI-worthy than this one. it's just a video game, for Christ's sake.

Just a video game? JUST A VIDEO GAME?!? IT'S MY ******* LIFE!!!

what are you, 12? enjoying it is one thing. "it's my life" is another.

emmybabe987 10

faith in humanity destroyed...

So many better excuses, so many better ones than something like that. I mean that is just heartless... and all for a game? There is no game out there that serious.
