Intelligence is irrelevant (but not uncorrelated) to qualifications, and qualifications doesn't necessarily imply opportunity. He might not be able to get a new job because of a lack of opening for his skills, and whatever his skills it doesn't mean he's smart or dumb.

I'm working in a grocery store because I'm taking 15 credits a semester and it's the only job I can find with a flexible enough schedule. Plus it's close to both my home and school. People look down on everyone who works in a grocery store and it sucks. We get treated like sub-human trash too many times in a day to count.

I work at a cinema called Showcase de Lux. We all joke about being Showcase's bitch because of the rediculous errands they have us run all the time.

Not true at all. You're not a slave by any definition. The job may suck but you can quit any time you want. From someone who's had these kinds of jobs, I know how terrible they can be, but I also know that if its that bad, I can literally walk right out the door.

You may be able to walk out, but sometimes that's not a viable option. People aren't really hiring now (at least where I am) so you have to stick to your job no matter how unfairly they treat you because, well, you really need the money. Tuition increases, gas prices, and grant/scholarship cuts mean you keep what you get.

Yeah just walk right out of your apartment while you are at it. Live on the streets and eat out of dumpsters. Yeah low wage employees are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FREE. I used to work in retail and they purposely keep you as low as they can while scheduling you odd hours to prevent you from finding a better job (or even holding a second crappy one) or even going to school to better yourself. Retail and all mcjobs are as close to real slavery as you can come in this nation. Time for a resurgence of the labor movement in this country unless you would like to live in third world conditions before the end of your lifetime.

That's such a bullshit excuse. Your employer is not obligated to give you a job or pay you a giant sum of money for no reason. You wanna know how expensive running a business is? And how often they go under? Start one. You don't think your job pays enough, find a better one. If no one wants to pay you a six figure salary for saying "you want fries with that," then maybe it's you who's lacking. Go to school, take out a loan (it's an investment), major in something that'll actually help you get a job (not renaissance Italian poetry). Is it hard? You bet. But that's the only way it'll happen. You are not entitled to anything. No one owes you anything. Your life is your problem. Make the most of it.

It sucks its so hard to try to find a new job. I've been working with cars for a while that its hard to find a job in a different field.

Yeah, I live in a town with 4 colleges in it and nearby, so it's very difficult to find a job. I've applied literally EVERYWHERE that I could even remotely be considered for, and this was the only option I had, so I took it, and I'm very grateful for it! Even if people tend to act like idiots towards me

You're only 17, you have so much time ahead of you to maybe go to college and decide what you want to do in life. This is only a passing phase, usually, and that is only if you choose to go further in life. Keep your chin up and look forward to what great things that life has in store for you! :)

Just don't become a manager. Cashiers may be pretty bad, but managers have mildly better pay for about 3x the work. Just focus on finding better things and move up when you can :)

Supervisors at the company I work for make almost three times as much as checkers do. If I choose to stay with them once I graduate university I can become a store manager and earn over 100K per year. It's definitely not as bad as one would think.
