Today, whilst riding my brand new dirt bike for the first time, the chain broke and slashed me down the back of the left leg with such force that it chipped the bone. FML

Today, while BMXing I felt my chain break loose. I only looked down for a split second, and that's all it took for me to crash into a young scooter kid, breaking not only my own nose and elbow, but both his arms. FML

Today, I was having motorbike lessons. We were parked by the side of the circuit when one side of my gloves dropped on the ground. I tried to pick it up without getting off the bike. I lost balance, fell off the bike and the bike landed on my leg, trapping me. FML

Today, I received my new e-bike. I could barely afford it but I desperately needed a method of transportation. On my second ride, I splashed through a fresh sidewalk. There was sidewalk in the chain, in the brakes, everywhere. There goes my brand new bike. FML

Today, after spending hundreds of dollars on parts and tools, and hours of research to teach myself how to perform the work, I upgraded my bike. It was also today that I made it 4 blocks from my house on my first ride before I hit a curb and broke my collarbone. FML

Today, I decided to get some exercise for the first time in months. I went to the store and bought a brand new bicycle and all the necessary paraphernalia. I drove a half hour to a bike trail, unloaded the bike, and started riding. 10 feet later, the chain snapped. FML

Today, my 10k dirt bike stopped starting. I used it once and owned it for less than 24 hours. Later in the afternoon, I dropped my phone and it cracked. Later in the evening, I was walking in my room towards my bed in the dark and I stubbed my toe on my Pc and one of the panels fell off. FML

Today, I fell off my bike. I grazed my knee, shin, thigh, hip, collar bone, shoulder and face. I also strained my wrist. As I was wheeling my bike away, I stung my other leg on nettles. FML

Today, I was riding on a stationary exercise bike at home, when I went to get off, my shorts got stuck under the seat. I dangled half upside down until my shorts ripped and I fell on the ground face first breaking my front tooth. I broke my tooth riding a bike that doesn’t even move. FML

Today, while hurrying by bike to an appointment, my chain broke. I quickly got off the road and managed to fix it on the sidewalk, covering my hands in black smear. Dirty but confident about my repair skills, I got up. A second later, felt something warm running down my neck. Bird poop. FML

The reason is that there was a weak link in the chain from the factory causing the chain to snap... and if there is a broken chain flying you are going to get hurt.

16 - Would you inspect a bike that you just bought? If it's brand new that's the dealer's job to inspect it.

Brand new from the dealership or sitting in your garage for years any experienced rider knows to do a full check of the bike. It's as simple as that. And to wear proper gear. He probably wouldn't be in the hospital if he was wearing proper riding gear.

Just curious how you guys know he wasn't wearing proper gear? I've known plenty of people who have been hurt on dirt bikes while wearing all their gear.

There's also nothing to suggest that OP is an experienced rider. And the gear is meant to protect you mostly from sliding along the ground, it isn't designed to protect against being hit with a broken chain moving at high speed.

Thats the thing, they dont. Motocross pants arnt even thick. Not anywhere thick enough to stop a chain either. Jeans wouldn't either. & for the riding boots, they dont come up all the way over your knee so there is still room for injury. Plus its funny how people blame the rider for the company's fault. Im pretty sure all of you wouldn't get a brand new car from the dealership inspected after you just bought it.

My street bike did this at 100mph. Been 3 years and I still don't walk right. Really good protective gear is expensive, but now you know it's more than worth it.
