Today I bought a 50$ voucher card to refill my phone. After I purchased it, I threw the receipt in the dustbin. When I got home, I found out that the 14-digit pin code was on the receipt. I basically threw 57 bucks in the dustbin. FML

Have you refilled your phone before? I would think that if you have, then you'd know that the code was on the receipt. Then again, we all have days where we derp out and forget how to function properly. Whatever the case, I hope you were able to redeem the credit that you lost.

If she needed the card to refill her phone, how is she going to call? (Assuming the phone is out of service already and that she has no landline.)

#2 was disliked because you have to assume multiple things for the post to make sense, so it in fact does not make the most sense. We don't know the phone is out of service, we don't know there's no landline and we don't know that OP doesn't have access to anybody else's phone.

On the up side, you can use this cautionary tale and advise friends to never throw away receipts lest they suffer the same fate as you. You can make signs and take to the streets, spreading your word of warning. You can alienate those closest to you with your constant semi-coherent rambling about the untold price—well, $57—you paid until not a single person can stand your presence.

Not sure how it works in other places but at the supermarket I work at, it's a pretty annoying process when people do this. You can't just reprint the receipt. The cashier has to find the serial number, call up the company (Optus, Telstra etc), wait on hold forever until they get through to an operator, who then has to check that the recharge number hadn't been used and can then void it so the supermarket can get their money back. Then the customer can be issued a new voucher. It takes a long time and when it's a busy shift it's very frustrating to have to do it because somebody was stupid enough to throw out their receipt.

Might have used a different service before... I've used paycards that are sealed, scratch, etc. Receipts are more typically for returns/warranty only.

Well, that's an expensive lesson. Considering what tutors charge, if you took a one-hour lesson on phone recharging, it would cost about $50.

If you paid with a credit or debit card, you should be able to have your bank or credit card provider pull the reciept and give you a copy, like you can request to see a copy of it. You might be able to get the code that way.

19, I never said they stored it - I said they could pull it. It's a kind of like a fail-safe if you get your card stolen or something - they can get/access the receipt so you can see what was purchased, how much, determine if it actually was you.

I assume a dustbin is another word for trash? I would have gone back and looked in that trash for that receipt. If all is lost, talk to customer service or anything besides giving up so "basically." I make good money but $57 is worth the effort to not give up "basically" so easily.
