Today, I was studying on a bench outside my dorm when the leg snapped. I decided to do the right thing and let administration know what happened. After assuring me it wasn't my fault, and having me fill out an incident report, they billed me $400. I can't enroll for next semester until I pay. FML

Today, my college dormitory accused me of something I didn't do, breaking a law that I never heard of, charged me $200 to fix "what I did wrong", and is forcing me to go to counciling at the school. Not only was I not on campus when it happened, but I was the one who reported the problem. FML

Today, I was docked and fined in my dorm building because of multiple noise complaints. What was I doing that was so noisy? I slipped in the shower and banged my head against the floor. Then when I reached for the towel rack to pull myself up, it broke and I slammed my wrist onto the ground. FML

Going by this story there is no way it could be OP's fault. I once had a desk break on me and was told I would have to pay for it, until I proved that it had no screws in place and was held together by glue.

I remember that during drama class, we had to stand on the tables and "express ourselves"... Yeah that didnt end well, someone broke a table exactly by half and he was told to pay for the table. We all complained about it, and then the teacher had to pay the 75 euros. Guess which class got the lowest marks..

Why bother disputing it? I would just pay the 400 just to get it over with. Fighting it will just waste time, energy and money. Not the best policy, but it's good to reduce your stress as much as possible.

Contact your school's bursar office about it. Hopefully you've documented your interactions with the administration. I'd also check up on your school's policies on dealing with damages not caused by malicious intent or carelessness, as they may work in your favor. It may even be worth contacting a lawyer and getting them to hassle the school. Typically, they'll gladly give up a $400 bill (which is pocket change to them) to not have to deal with legal issues.
