Today, I picked my car up from the shop. After 5 minutes I noticed the oil and check engine light on. I pulled over, then the engine shut off completely. Turns out they forgot to put oil back in my car. I'll be needing a new engine. FML

It was their mistake, their damage, they'll cover the cost. Bring it up to them with proof, escalate the problem if needbe, and go to court if it gets that far (it won't, they'll fix it).

This happened to my mom (or a similar incident anyway). Shortly after she got her oil changed in her 1991 Saab, the check oil light came on. When she had it towed to the Saab place, the mechanic right away recognized it as the handiwork of a particular Jiffy Lube worker, and asked her if she had recently gotten the oil changed at a particular Jiffy Lube. Apparently this one guy at a Jiffy Lube in her town is known to have messed up several older Saabs by draining the oil, then pouring new oil in where transmission fluid goes. My mom's Saab needed a new engine AND transmission.

#77: Ha ha! You just got screwed over by the Saab dealership. It is not possible to "accidentally put the engine oil in the transmission". You have to partially drop the tranny to change the transmission fluid. I am 100% sure the guy at the Saab dealership lied to you so they could make more money to replace a transmission.

Google "forgot to refill the engine with oil" and you will see that this happens a lot more than you might think. Also I don't know about Saabs but I have seen a number of domestic cars come in after some idiot poured motor oil in the transmission check tube to "top it off".

Dunno about them repairing the vehicle. Something similar happened to a friend and she had to pay most of the expense for repairs

In fairness, that light isn't something that really catches your eye if you don't look at the speedometer and stuff fairly closely.

Or maybe the light doesn't lit up that soon. Maybe they changed the oil but forgot to tighten the lid so it spilled. Many things could've happened. Of course it's the shop's fault, but a "check engine" light is quite eye-catching so that could be possibly be avoided. One thing that I learned with cars: No matter whose fault it is, you always get screwed up. :(

I'd say her laywer will drive a Ferrari, but there's not much chance of that in a simple property damage case that this is. She should get a decent car though. And I hope she gets a rental until the check clears.
