Self confidence

By Anonymous - This FML is from back in 2009 but it's good stuff - United States

Today, my parents and I were looking through old photos. My dad comments, "Wow you were chubby back then. But that's ok, it was baby fat." Then he turns to me and asks, "What's your excuse now?" FML

Oooh, that was harsh. Parents are pretty inconsiderate sometimes. I know people are going to say, 'It was just a joke, lighten up'. But jokes like that can really hurt people's self esteem.

im fairly sure he's joking and this isnt anything to get upset about

That's when you smile and say, "It's hereditary"

*weeps tears of joy* "you truly are my son/daughter"

If my child was actually fat, I would say that to them. I thank people if/when they tell me I look fat, especially my mom. It means I'm not eating right or exercising enough and need to do better. What is your excuse now, OP? Lethargy?

Maybe he's right? Use that as motivation to lose weight.

i hate postings like this. i spent 7 yrs with an ED, ended up hospitalized, but after intensive treatment that stuff still haunts you. it is NOT ok for parents to casually say stuff like that to their kids. if you feel like you need to lose some weight, eat healthy and work out. if youre happy with who you are (and healthy) then f your parents who say crap to you. and all you people who writ things like "stop eating" know your words may affect more people than you think, and not in a healthy way.

I think it was a joke. My mama says stupid shit like that to me all the time and we both know she doesn't actually think I'm fat/ugly/whatever.

and when my mother looks trought old photos she always says "oh, you were so slim back then". i think it's natural that i was slim when i was 7 years old, because i wasn't maturing. don't get upset, parents sometimes just want us to be totally perfect

I often feel like the people - usually teenage girls (you can tell) - who post these things are probably pushing three bills. If that's the case, maybe they're just trying to send a message, albeit the wrong way. And if you're not overweight, who cares? It's either a joke or an insensitive person saying something stupid.

well, having been fat for most of my life, people make TONS of excuses, tons of them. my parents used to say that i just had baby fat and that i'd lose all the weight when i turn 18, and i'll lose 12lbs when i get my first period, i'm just "big boned'd" stupid stuff that now I look back on it was complete bullshit. if u wanna lose weight then eat right but dont make excuses. i've lost 40lbs with only eating healthy because I can't exercise with my back problem, if i can do it any1 can do it, trust me

dads can be real douchebags sometimes. I am however disturbed how everyone is automatically assuming you are obese. BUT if your dad's comment hurt you that much, then making healthy changes will make YOU feel more confident, and you'll be able to handle snide remarks. You can't lose weight because someone told you, in the end, you have to do it for yourself. Good luck!
