Fake it til you make it

Today, I went out to dinner with my mom and several of her friends. My mom spent the entire night gushing about my Ivy League school and med student boyfriend. I attend a state university and I'm single. She threatened to cut me off if I didn't play along. FML

I would've spent the whole night being sarcastic AF. Like Friend: wow, he's studying to be a doctor? Me: well someone's gonna need to pay for the boob job

That sucks. She doesn't have the right to do that, no matter what the situation.

You're right, but when the mom's paying for college she can pretty much do what she wants. Lol when my mom is mad she threatens to not pay for my college if i dont empty the dishwasher.

Wow. sorry OP :( your mom should be proud of you no matter what you do with your life

So sad and shallow, maybe your mom should realise that appearances and status have zero value compared to being proud of your kid.

...or OP should get a job and be financially supporting themselves.

What does that have to do with their mother's insecurities?

Sorry OP. My mom is the same way only she called the university I got accepted into a community college and told me my boyfriend who got accepted into an elite private college deserved a girl better than me. Parents like to brag and get upset when they hear friends doing it and can't themselves. Not condoning your mom's actions but you should talk to her about it. It's not right at all.

your mom has a sickness called mythomania, it's not your problem though OP, and you don't need to lie to cover her condition! wish you the best OP

How would you know she has mythomania? Have you actually met her, have further proof she has it, or did you just look it up on Google?

mythomania is a irrepressible urge to lie, and actually refuse reality and telling all her surroundings about a alternative lifestyle of her daughter which doesn't exist, her mom obviously has it, gushing a whole evening about a fantasy boyfriend?? common?!

Or she just wanted people to think that her daughter was very successful? For her own benefit of course.

I think I know someone who has that, except she doesn't know when she's lying, she's convinced herself most of her lies are true. This mom knows that she is lying, she wants to make herself look better. She's not delusional, the fact that she threatened to cut off her daughter tells us she's aware.

Yeah, the woman is being a bitch. She wants to gush about what she sees as making her daughter successful, there's no way in hell you can diagnose her with something like that with one situation and not even knowing her.

I'm sure you have plenty of achievements done without the help of a fancy school or boyfriend, coping with your mother sounds like it's one! Why not loudly brag about those next time she tries to lie?

How tf is that daydreaming? What a daft thing to say.

This doesn't reflect on you, OP. Your mom just seems to feel the need to impress others, and apparently, validates herself through you. Making up those things just speaks to her insecurity, not your accomplishments not being enough. By the way, I went to a state university and graduate school, and my research has been published in high impact biomedical journals, and won national awards. An ivy league education isn't necessary to be successful.
