It's not a question of deserving, it's a question of consequences. If you steal a car then get into a shootout with police, I'm not going to lose any sleep if they get killed over their idiotic decision making. If I have to deal with a criminal, I'm not going to value them over my family's safety. If you get people to stop doing stupid things... Then I'll think differently.

Agreed! Nobody deserves to die just for stealing a car. But when they double down by shooting at police, they deserve what they get. Since they were obviously willing to hurt or kill others, the police taking them out may have saved innocent lives in the long run, and theirs were far from innocent.

Stealing cars is a rather petty job. Mine was stolen and never recovered, but I'm sure it got chopped into little parts and I'm seeing small pieces of it on the road. I hope the thieves got the shock of a lifetime when they opened up the truck and saw a three-foot-long plastic evil Easter bunny. That always brings a smile to my face.
