Today, it's day three of our power being off because of a glitch in the power company's computer system. They won't turn it back on until we pay the $2000 we owe from 2010. We moved here in 2012. FML

Isn't there a piece of paper somewhere with your signature on it from when you started the account? Refer them to that. And don't forget to mention those media watchdogs that love to embarrass companies on the news.

These are dark times indeed. I hope you overcome their resistance and find enlightenment.

That's awful I hate when stuff like that happens. I would fight it, even show them proof you havnt lived there long enough for that.

I'm sure you can get it sorted out! Good luck! :)

Shit that's messed up! Is there any way to prove where you lived during the time of 2010? Hopefully if you can prove it, then they can't charge you for something you've never lived in until now.

I agree that the current times are pretty bad, but there is potential for it to get better and for their ohm to get electricity again.

Oh wow, a decent play on words, shocking.

mad respect 5 and 18, watt you guys posted is incredibly clever!

You're being downvoted, but threat of legal action in the face of bullshit like this is a viable option.

phone them and tell them they've made an error they will sort it out for you :)

You don't think they've already tried that?

Their signed lease agreement or deed from the date of their move-in/closing, depending on if they are renting or bought, should suffice. If they still relent then lawyer up.

I used to work for an elec company - just cause the debt is from 2010, doesn't mean it isn't theirs from another address and got transferred over finally. Can't believe they'd let things get bad enough to be disconnected unless the balance is theirs

I have to agree with 9; at least where I live, the power company bills follow the person, not the address. If they have an outstanding balance, it would be based on their Social Security Number/Driver's License, not their mailing address.

Sue them, assuming you have the paperwork to prove you were not a resident in 2010 you win

sounds like extortion. Report it to the governing body.
