Today, I got into an accident. As I was talking to a police officer about what happened, the tow truck driver managed to take my car and drive away, leaving me with no phone or wallet. I just spent an hour walking home in a hail storm. FML

You see, son, when a tow truck and a car love each other very much, they "hook up". This is followed by the truck giving the car a "ride", most likely to the tow yard. But afterwards, the tow truck will move on to hooking up with other cars, while OP's car is left alone, feeling used and very sad.

I was thinking the same thing. aren't tow truck drivers supposed to ask you if you need anything out of your car, etc?

My best guess is that the OP didn't ask/inform the officer of the situation. When I was involved in a collision a few months ago, the officer on scene let me hang out in his cruiser to keep warm (my car was totalled and it was well below freezing out). He was also really helpful in offering his advice on how to approach my insurance claim, etc. In the end however, unlike the OP, I was able to tag a ride along with the tow truck that had what was left of my car.

#17 being Canadian police officers and such, shouldn't you think they would be apologetic, possibly cry a little for that individual, and even offer up their own vehicle ehy?

that's what I was thinking or even catching a ride in the tow truck. that's usually how it works so in this case I'd say the tow driver was an ass for not making sure you didn't need anything out of your vehicle. and I'm assuming she didn't ask the officer for a ride. their saying is to protect and serve. he could've protected you from the hail storm and served you by offering a ride to your house or the tow place.

At least OP wasn't native. Alaskan police often took them to the middle of nowhere and kicked them out. Many died.

Oh wow I'm sorry about that OP. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't an officer usually give you a ride home in this case? Or in OP's case, take you to where your car is being taken to? I know it isn't their obligation, but I always thought that they did.

In the US, the supreme court actually ruled that the police have no obligation to help you. Maybe Canadian tax payers are also wasting their money on paying police officers?

I'm sorry but they are police officers. Of course they have to help us! That guy stole his car and the police has to help you in this case....

Unfortunately nowadays some places won't take people home due to liability issues. It's not that they don't want to. It's just because they can't. You can thank the greedy sue happy people for that.

If you weren't given a chance to get those things out of your car, I'd have a chit chat with the tow company and maybe get a free tow or work out some kind of deal. It seems unlikely that you wouldn't get those things given the chance to do so, but people have done things far more dumb than that.

I'm happy the car accident wasn't serious to the point that paramedics were needed at the scene. A hail storm sounds nasty though, sorry this happened to you OP! :/

You know when you have a big ass phone (90% of what's sold on the market) and a wallet in your pocket, it's uncomfortable to sit down with them in your pocket, which is what you are doing whilst driving, so you take them out your pocket and put them on the side. Also he had an accident so his first reflex wasn't to grab them.. TL;DR hurr durr common sense
