Today, a girl confessed her long-time love for me and that I was her first true love. No one's ever told me they love me before and I thought it was sweet. I had to refuse and make her cry though, because she's 16 and I'm 32. I feel awful. FML

Good for both of you that you were the responsible adult. Her 25 year old self will thank you in nine years.

Thank you for being a decent human being and not taking advantage of someone. If she's still around, you can try explaining to her that you don't want to date her not because she did anything wrong, but because the age difference means there would be an inequality to your relationship that you aren't comfortable with.

People in the comments seriously think that guys will rape girls because they can??? Y'all are delusional. "thanks for being responsible" What? noooooooo thats just common sense, im 20, and if a 16 y/o came up to me and said that, id slap her and run.

Whoa buddy, calm down, how did you jump to rape here? You know what, you need to face reality, and the reality is, if a young, pretty girl came up to an older guy and confessed feelings for him, SOME guys would take advantage of it. Is it common sense to push her away, yes, but common sense isn't always so common, and some people are just perverted and only think about one thing. The people here are merely acknowledging that the OP did the right thing and supporting him even though the situation is probably extremely difficult for many reasons. Thanking someone for honorable actions is pretty standard, my boyfriend is supposed to treat me with respect and as an equal, just cause it's something he's supposed to do, doesn't mean I shouldn't be grateful for the fact that he does it.

Okay, hold up bud. I wasn't implying that everyone who has the chance to rape someone will. But there are people who would either knowingly take advantage of this girl still being in the process of maturing and them being her elder. There are also people who would have accepted her confession without understanding the power imbalance that would be inherent in such a relationship. Or would have proposed "waiting" for her, which is child grooming. I was not saying EVERY person would be a rapist given chance- I was acknowledging that there were people who would have taken advantage of her, knowingly or not, and thanking him for making the right choice. Don't go putting words in peoples' mouths- I can't speak for anyone else, but I'd be relieved in any situation where the older person turned down someone so much younger.

Nobody talked about rape. And this has happened to me multiple times by older guys when I was 15.

Don't feel awful. You were being responsible and smart about not letting her obsess over you if you didn't tell her. Good for you for taking advantage of a teen who has no idea what love really is.

aw, that's sweet. don't worry, you don't have to feel awful. maybe now that you both talked and you told her it couldn't happen, she might find a boyfriend her own age.

If her age is off the clock she's on the ****.

You did the right thing, OP. I understand that you feel bad but had you agreed to be in a relationship with her you could've gotten in serious trouble with the law.
